"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."

Ludwig Wittgenstein

At Wellesley Park Primary School, children are encouraged to embrace the French culture and develop their confidence and curiosity around this language. Our curriculum focuses on six key topics (that the children return to and build upon their understanding of each year), embedding the skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar, which will help them with further language study.

We teach French across Key Stage 2. The school uses the National Curriculum which clear progression for the development of speaking and listening and vocabulary acquisition. There are resources to support the learning opportunities for pupils and the chance to revisit prior knowledge through returning to each of our 6 key topics that are built upon each year. Children learn French through a variety of games, role-play, websites and song and rhyme activities and are praised for taking part in every lesson. Teachers are supported by expert secondary school French teachers.

Through the high quality first teaching of French taking place we will see the impact of the subject in the following ways:

Children will be able to communicate with each other in French.
Children will become aware of language structure.
Children will develop four key skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Children will develop an understanding of the French culture.
Children will learn how language skills can be applied to a range of languages.
Children will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
